While sometimes viewed as an informal or "extra" activity, effective mentorship is a competency that drives excellence across all professional disciplines. This presentation provides the evidence-based science of mentoring, addressing how structured guidance supports the unique needs of diverse individuals—from students and trainees to clinicians, educators, and researchers—while highlighting the essential role institutions play in training and rewarding those who guide the next generation.

BIO:
Marci Lobel, PhD is the recipient of numerous awards for research, teaching, and mentoring, including the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Psychological Science. Dr. Lobel is Distinguished Professor at Stony Brook University in New York, where she directs the Stress and Reproduction (STAR) Laboratory. Dr. Lobel received her undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Harvard University and her doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles. Over her career, she has taught more than 15,000 students in large lecture courses and small seminars and closely mentored hundreds of undergraduate, Masters, PhD, and MD students. Dr. Lobel also conducts research on mentoring and leads workshops on teaching and mentoring. As a 2025-2026 Fulbright Distinguished Scholar, she is based in the Masaryk University Department of Medical Psychology and Ethics, teaching her novel course in The Psychology of Women’s Health and conducting pioneering research on the experiences of pregnant Czech women.
